iPhone 15 Series



In any other year, the introduction of a titanium build and the branding of a new “Pro” processor would have been the biggest bullet points following an iPhone event. Apple’s Sept. 12, 2023 ‘Wonderlust’ presentation heralded the arrival of an iPhone 15 Pro with these features in tow (as well as a base iPhone 15 with a few new tricks of its own). Throughout the stream, Tim Cook and company tried really hard to put the design and capabilities of Apple’s new smartphone lineup front and center.

It is entirely possible, however, that the Apple faithful of the future won’t remember the iPhone 15 series for the new chassis of the Pro model, the increased power of the A17 Pro chip or the inclusion of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 15. Instead, there’s a good chance they’ll remember it for the charging standard it finally adopted.

All four iPhones released in 2023 – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – come with a USB-C port. Apple’s proprietary Lightning standard, first introduced with the iPhone 5 in 2012, is no longer present on the company’s latest smartphones. It’s a big deal.

That’s not to say Apple didn’t bring other notable features to the iPhone 15 series. The 5x telephoto camera lens included with the iPhone 15 Pro Max aims to substantially improve long-distance shots. Both iPhone 15 Pro models have banished their mute switches in favor of an intriguing new “Action Button,” which can be mapped to any one of several different functions. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus gain a power boost via the same A16 Bionic processor previously found in 2022’s Pro models.

It’s the iPhone 15's switch to USB-C, however, that might ultimately have the most day-to-day and long-term impact. Suddenly, iPhone owners don’t need to carry two types of cables to charge their Apple devices, and a whole world of previously-incompatible USB-C accessories are now available to use.

Every annual release of the iPhone improves its computational power. Most come with a better set of camera lenses, or a tweak to the look and feel of the device. What’s never happened in the iPhone’s history is Apple dropping its proprietary connector – and the revenue that comes from licensing – to adopt a more open standard. It’s a change that’ll reverberate for years to come and, for some, may make an upgrade to the iPhone 15 series far more tempting than usual.
