Canon is making a new lens to capture spatial video for Apple’s Vision Pro
It’s made for the R7 camera.
Apple, during its WWDC 2024 keynote, unveiled its vision for enhancing content creation for the Vision Pro headset. In a surprising move, the tech giant announced a collaboration with Canon, a renowned camera manufacturer, to develop a dedicated spatial lens for the Canon R7 camera.
While details are limited, the new lens promises a more discreet design compared to traditional bulky stereo lenses. This compact 7.8mm f/4 lens incorporates STM (stepping motor technology), ensuring quiet and smooth focus operation, which is crucial for capturing high-quality spatial video.
This collaboration is particularly intriguing given Canon's previous statements about the limitations of its current cameras in delivering video that matches the Vision Pro's capabilities. This suggests that the new lens, coupled with the R7, aims to address these limitations and unlock new possibilities for capturing immersive content.
Apple's commitment to improving content creation doesn't stop at the lens. The company also revealed updates to its 180-degree 3D 8K video format and partnered with Blackmagic to streamline the workflow for creating Immersive Videos.
This collaboration signifies a major step towards expanding the creative potential of the Vision Pro and making it a more appealing platform for content creators. The combination of Canon's expertise in optics and Apple's innovative technology could revolutionize how we capture and experience spatial content.
While we await further details on the specifications and capabilities of this new lens-and-camera combo, it's clear that Apple and Canon are committed to pushing the boundaries of immersive content creation.
