A Full Camera Toolkit: The iPhone's Advanced Camera Systems

The camera is a centerpiece of the iPhone experience, and the latest generation introduces a comprehensive set of upgrades to its camera systems. With new hardware, enhanced software, and powerful video capabilities, these cameras are designed to cater to a wide range of users, from casual photographers to creative professionals.

The Pro Fusion Camera System: All 48MP

The ultimate camera experience is found on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which feature a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system. This means that all three rear cameras—Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto—are now 48MP.

  • 48MP Fusion Main: The main camera is the workhorse, offering a high-resolution sensor and a wide aperture for stunning detail and low-light performance. It also acts as a 2x optical-quality zoom, a feature powered by the 48MP sensor.

  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide: The Ultra Wide camera captures expansive scenes with a 120-degree field of view. Its 48MP sensor allows for more detail and clarity, making it ideal for both dramatic landscapes and macro photography.

  • 48MP Fusion Telephoto: This is where the Pro models shine. The telephoto lens now has a 48MP sensor and a new tetraprism design, delivering a massive 8x optical-quality zoom. This is the longest zoom ever on an iPhone, providing incredible reach for capturing distant subjects.

The Standard Camera Systems

The iPhone 17 and iPhone Air also boast impressive camera systems designed to give you professional-looking results without the Pro price tag.

  • iPhone 17: It features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, which includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. This setup provides excellent versatility for a standard phone.

  • iPhone Air: The iPhone Air has a 48MP Fusion camera system with a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 12MP telephoto lens. This gives it a simple but powerful two-camera setup.

Photos with Unprecedented Detail

All of the new models can take super-high-resolution photos in both 24MP and 48MP. While the default is a more manageable 24MP, you can switch to 48MP for the ultimate detail.

Next-Generation Portraits

Portrait photography gets a major upgrade across the lineup. The new iPhones can now capture depth information automatically, even in standard Photo mode. This means you can add a depth-of-field effect with Focus and Depth Control after you've taken the photo.

Video Capabilities

Video recording has also been enhanced:

  • Dolby Vision up to 4K at 120 fps: On the Pro models, you can record cinema-quality video in Dolby Vision HDR at up to 4K resolution and a staggering 120 frames per second. The other models support up to 4K at 60 fps.

  • Latest-generation Photographic Styles: This feature allows you to choose from a variety of presets—like Rich Contrast, Vibrant, or Cool—that apply adjustments to your photos in real-time, giving you more creative control over your images.

Optical Zoom Options

The different camera systems offer a range of optical zoom options:

  • iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max: With its three-camera system, you get a full range of optical zooms, including 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x.

  • iPhone Air: It features a 1x and 2x optical zoom.

  • iPhone 17: It offers optical zoom at 0.5x, 1x, and 2x.
