WhatsApp Finally Tests Read-Once Disappearing Messages

Now, WhatsApp is finally addressing this friction.

How it works: When typing a message, users will be able to designate it as view-once, likely by long-pressing the send button or tapping a dedicated "1" icon.
The result: The recipient can open the text, read it, and the moment they exit the viewer, the message vanishes forever.
Best for: Sending highly sensitive, temporary information like passwords, one-time verification codes, or bank details.
The "After Reading" Timer
For conversations that don't need to vanish instantly but still require privacy, WhatsApp is testing an "After reading" option within its standard disappearing messages settings.
How it works: Instead of the expiration timer starting when the message is sent, the countdown begins only after the recipient actually opens and reads it.
Duration options: Users can set the post-read timer to 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours.
The fallback: If the recipient never opens the message, WhatsApp will automatically clear it from the chat after 24 hours.
