The Cost of Independence: Double Fine Lays Off a Quarter of Its Staff

The ripple effects of Microsoft’s massive gaming restructuring continue to be felt across the industry. Just weeks after it was announced that beloved indie developer Double Fine Productions would be spinning out of Xbox Game Studios to return to its independent roots, the studio has been hit with significant layoffs.

Today, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer confirmed that the company has let go of 23 employees—roughly 25.5% of its approximately 90-person workforce.

"Only the Survival of Our Studio"

The news broke via a post from the company on Bluesky, where Schafer addressed the painful reality of downsizing a closely knit team.

"As a small, tightly-knit team, these actions are not taken lightly. Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action," Schafer wrote. "Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain."

He emphasized the impact the departing staff had on the studio's culture and games, confirming that Double Fine is committed to supporting those affected by the cuts.

The Xbox Exodus

Double Fine, the studio famous for charming and highly creative titles like Psychonauts, Grim Fandango, and Costume Quest, was acquired by Xbox in 2019. Under the Microsoft umbrella, they released the critically acclaimed Psychonauts 2 in 2021, followed by the platformer Keeper in 2025 and the multiplayer brawler Kiln earlier this year.

However, the summer of 2026 has brought a bloodbath of layoffs to Microsoft's gaming division. Over 3,200 people were put out of work as part of a massive restructuring effort. Amidst these cuts, it was revealed earlier in July that Double Fine—along with Compulsion Games—would be going independent once again.

While Xbox confirmed that Double Fine fully returned to its independent status earlier this week with its intellectual properties and catalog intact, the financial realities of leaving the massive safety net of Microsoft are now starkly visible. To survive as an independent entity in today's volatile market, the studio had to shrink to a sustainable footprint.

What’s Next for Double Fine?

Double Fine is no stranger to surviving as an independent studio. They successfully navigated independence for the vast majority of their history prior to 2019. Xbox released a statement following the layoffs, noting, "As they begin their next chapter as an independent studio, we look forward to seeing what they create next. Double Fine is now fully independent and manages its own operations".

While the studio retains the rights to its beloved franchises and has promised updates on future projects, the immediate focus is undoubtedly on the human cost of this transition. For now, the gaming community is left to watch as another group of talented developers enters a difficult job market during one of the industry's most turbulent years.
