Google Fi Upgrades Device Protection: Asurion is the New Provider, Loss & Theft Claims Doubled

Google Fi is rolling out a significant update to its device protection program, offering customers enhanced peace of mind. Following a similar move made by Pixel Preferred Care earlier this year, Google Fi is switching its insurance provider and, more importantly, doubling the number of loss and theft claims allowed per year.

For anyone purchasing a new phone or smartwatch through Google Fi, this change makes the optional protection plan more valuable than ever. Let's break down what’s new and what it means for you.

What's Changing with Google Fi Device Protection?

The update, detailed in a revised Google Fi support article, introduces two fundamental changes for devices shipped on or after July 14, 2025.

New Provider: Welcome, Asurion

First, Google Fi is officially partnering with Asurion as its new device protection provider. Previously, the plans were administered by Assurant. This change aligns Fi's program more closely with Google's broader device ecosystem.

Interestingly, many users may not notice a huge difference in the repair process itself, as Asurion's subsidiary, uBreakiFix, was already the "authorized repair partner" for many claims under the old plan. This move essentially consolidates the entire protection and repair process under the Asurion umbrella, which could lead to a more streamlined claims experience.

The Biggest Upgrade: Double the Loss & Theft Coverage

The most significant benefit for customers is the enhanced coverage. The updated Google Fi device protection plan now covers up to two (2) loss or theft claims in any rolling 12-month period.

This is a major improvement from the previous limit of just one claim. Losing a phone or having it stolen is a stressful and expensive experience, and this extra layer of protection acknowledges that misfortune can sometimes strike twice.

This is in addition to the existing coverage, which includes:

  • Accidental Damage: Up to two claims for physical damage (like cracked screens, drops, or spills) in any rolling 12-month period.

  • Mechanical Breakdown: Unlimited coverage for device failures that occur after the manufacturer's warranty has expired.

Note: The loss and theft coverage enhancement is available in all regions except New York.

At a Glance: Plan Costs and Deductibles

The cost of Google Fi device protection consists of a monthly premium and a per-incident deductible, which varies depending on the device and the type of claim. To enroll, you must add the protection plan within 30 days of your new device shipping.

What This Means for Google Fi Customers

This is a clear win for consumers. The move to double the loss and theft coverage provides a much stronger safety net, making the device protection plan a more compelling offer, especially for those investing in premium devices like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold or Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

With the high cost of flagship smartphones, having a plan that protects against two instances of loss or theft in a year offers substantial value and peace of mind. The consolidation under Asurion also promises a more integrated service experience from claim to repair.

If you're planning on buying a new device from Google Fi, the newly enhanced protection plan is certainly worth a closer look.
