Apple Buyer's Guide: September 2026 — What to Buy, What to Skip, and What's Worth the Wait

Apple's lineup is in a weird, transitional spot right now. Some products just got refreshed and are genuinely great buys. Others are sitting right on the edge of a major update, which means buying today could mean watching a better version land within weeks. This guide breaks down every category — iPhone, Mac, iPad, Watch, AirPods, and the rest of Apple's ecosystem — so you know exactly where to spend your money this month and where to hold off.

Note: All "next update" timing below is based on current rumors and reports, not confirmed by Apple. Release timing may change.

iPhone

This is the category where "wait" is the loudest word in the room. With new iPhones expected imminently, the current Pro-tier lineup is a hard pass for anyone who can hold out.

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max (A19 Pro chip) — Not recommended. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected this month with major chip and camera upgrades, so buying now means missing a big leap for a short wait.
  • iPhone 17 Pro (A19 Pro chip) — Not recommended. Same story as the Pro Max: the iPhone 18 Pro lands this month with significant improvements.
  • iPhone Air (A19 Pro chip) — Neutral. It's a striking, ultra-thin design, but a second-generation model with a second rear camera is expected next year, so it's a fine buy now if you love the form factor, just know a more capable version is coming.
  • iPhone 17 (A19 chip) — Neutral. Honestly a great phone — 120Hz ProMotion, solid battery life, and improved cameras — but it's due for its own refresh next spring.
  • iPhone 17e (A19 chip) — Neutral. Delivers much of the core iPhone 17 experience at a lower price point, making it a smart budget pick if you don't need the newest hardware.
  • iPhone 16 / 16 Plus (A18 chip) — Not recommended. The 17e now offers better value at a similar price, and the standard iPhone 17 is simply the better overall buy.

Bottom line: Unless you need a phone immediately, wait for this month's announcement before buying anything in the Pro tier.

Mac

The Mac lineup is a mixed bag — some genuinely excellent recent updates sit right alongside laptops you should actively avoid until later this year.

  • 13" MacBook Neo (A18 Pro chip) — Recommended. Enough performance and excellent value for most users; the perfect entry-level MacBook. Next update expected in 2027.
  • 13" MacBook Air (M5 chip) — Recommended. Updated earlier this year with an M5 chip and double the base storage — a great midrange MacBook. Next update: spring 2027.
  • 15" MacBook Air (M5 chip) — Recommended. Same story as its smaller sibling: fresh chip, more storage, strong midrange value. Next update: spring 2027.
  • 14" MacBook Pro (M5 chip) — Not recommended. Still capable, but it's best to wait for the upcoming model with an M6 chip, expected October/November.
  • 14" MacBook Pro (M5 Pro/M5 Max chips) — Not recommended. Wait for the redesigned touchscreen OLED model expected late 2026 or early 2027 — a much bigger leap than an incremental chip bump.
  • 16" MacBook Pro (M5 Pro/M5 Max chips) — Not recommended. Same reasoning: the redesigned OLED touchscreen model is coming late 2026/early 2027.

On the desktop side, things look a lot better:

  • 24" iMac (M4 chip) — Not recommended. It's best to wait for a new update with M5 or M6 coming later this year (expected October/November).
  • Mac mini (M6/M5 Pro chips) — Recommended. Just updated with more powerful chips — a great time to buy one.
  • Mac Studio (M5 Max/M5 Ultra chips) — Recommended. Just refreshed with serious power-user-grade chips.
  • Studio Display — Recommended. Updated earlier this year, it remains a great 5K option for Mac users.
  • Studio Display XDR — Recommended. A stunning 5K mini-LED display with a 120Hz refresh rate — excellent, if very expensive.

Bottom line: Buy the MacBook Air, MacBook Neo, Mac mini, Mac Studio, or either Studio Display with confidence. Avoid the MacBook Pro and iMac until their upcoming refreshes.

iPad

The iPad lineup rewards patience in the Pro tier but is solid almost everywhere else.

  • 11" iPad Pro (M5 chip) — Neutral. Good if you're upgrading from an M2 or older model, but a new version with an M6 or M7 chip is expected next year.
  • 13" iPad Pro (M5 chip) — Neutral. Same trade-off as the smaller Pro.
  • 11" iPad Air (M4 chip) — Recommended. The best option for most users, though a new iPad Air with an OLED display is expected early next year.
  • 13" iPad Air (M4 chip) — Recommended. Same strong pick, same OLED successor on the horizon.
  • 11" iPad (A16 chip) — Wait. Still a good budget option, but a new model with a faster chip and Apple Intelligence support is expected next year.
  • 8.3" iPad mini (A17 Pro chip) — Not recommended. Wait for the next iPad mini, expected by this fall with an OLED display and a major chip upgrade.

Bottom line: The iPad Air is the sweet spot for most buyers right now. Everything else has a meaningful upgrade coming within the next several months.

Apple Watch

Every current Apple Watch is either about to be replaced or in an uncertain holding pattern.

  • Series 11 (2025 model) — Not recommended. Wait for the Apple Watch Series 12, expected this month with a new chip and other updates.
  • Ultra 3 (2025 model) — Not recommended. Wait for the Apple Watch Ultra 4, also expected this month.
  • SE 3 (2025 model) — Neutral. A great option for new Apple Watch users, though it's unclear when its next update is coming.

Bottom line: If you already own a Watch, hold off on upgrading — new models are essentially imminent.

AirPods

The AirPods lineup has a clear split between "wait a few weeks" and "buy right now."

  • AirPods 4 (Standard) — Not recommended. Wait for the new model coming as soon as this month with better sound and new features.
  • AirPods 4 (with ANC) — Not recommended. Same reasoning — hold off for the refresh.
  • AirPods Pro 3 (2025 model) — Recommended. The best all-around AirPods with great sound and ANC. A camera-equipped model isn't expected until 2027, so there's no reason to wait.
  • AirPods Max 2 — Recommended. Updated this year with an H2 chip, with no further updates expected soon — a great time to buy.

Bottom line: Skip the standard AirPods 4 for now, but the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 are safe, excellent buys.

Everything Else

Rounding out the ecosystem — Vision Pro, Apple TV, HomePod, and AirTag — the picture is just as mixed.

  • Apple Vision Pro (M5 chip) — Recommended. Updated last year with the M5 chip. Good for new users, though not worth upgrading from the original if you already own one.
  • Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) — Not recommended. Wait for the new model, which could arrive this fall with a new chip, Wi-Fi 7 support, and more.
  • HomePod (2nd gen) — Neutral. Expensive, but a great buy if you want excellent sound. The timing of its next update is unclear.
  • HomePod mini (1st gen) — Not recommended. Wait for a refreshed model expected this fall with a newer chip and Siri AI support.
  • AirTag (2nd gen) — Recommended. Updated this year with expanded finding range, a louder speaker, and more.

The Short Version

Buy now: MacBook Air (13"/15"), MacBook Neo, Mac mini, Mac Studio, Studio Display, Studio Display XDR, iPad Air (11"/13"), AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max 2, Apple Vision Pro, AirTag.

Wait: iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max, MacBook Pro (14"/16"), iMac, iPad mini, iPad (11"), Apple Watch Series 11/Ultra 3, AirPods 4, Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini.

Fine either way (neutral): iPhone 17/17e/Air, iPad Pro (11"/13"), Apple Watch SE 3, HomePod.

Apple's September event should clear up a lot of this within the next few weeks — several categories (iPhone Pro, Apple Watch, AirPods 4) all have updates expected "this month." If you can wait even a little longer, it's probably worth it before making a Pro-tier purchase.
