"Real Life, Real Quick": Instagram Battles Snapchat and BeReal with New "Instants" App
In a major move to recapture the "low-pressure" magic of early social media, Instagram has officially launched a standalone app called Instants.
Here is the breakdown of how Instants works and why it might change how you use Instagram.
1. The Core Gimmick: No Edits, No Uploads
The defining feature of Instants is its strict adherence to "the moment."
Single-Tap Capture: The app opens directly to the camera.
One tap takes a photo; there are no filters, no "Paris" overlays, and no professional editing tools. No Camera Roll: You cannot upload a photo you took yesterday.
If it wasn't captured in the Instants app right now, it can’t be shared. One-Time View: Recipients can only view an "Instant" once.
After that, it’s gone. 24-Hour Expiry: Even if a friend hasn't opened your photo yet, it will permanently expire 24 hours after it was sent.
2. Standalone App vs. Main App
While Instants is a standalone app (available on iOS and Android), it isn't an island.
Cross-Platform Sync: Anything you send via the Instants app also appears in your Instagram DMs.
You don't need to build a new friend list; it automatically uses your Mutual Followers and Close Friends lists from your main account. The "Shots" Evolution: Industry insiders note that Instants is essentially the evolution of "Shots," a feature Meta tested internally throughout 2025 before deciding to give it a dedicated icon on your home screen.
3. Current Availability & Rollout
As of April 24, 2026, Meta is taking a cautious "regional test" approach.
Test Markets: The app is currently live in Spain and Italy.
Global Expansion: While a Meta spokesperson confirmed the app is coming to Malaysia and other Southeast Asian markets "soon," there is currently no confirmed release date for the United States or the UK.
The Goal: Meta is reportedly testing multiple "versions" of the app in these regions to see which UI drives the most daily engagement before a global push.
4. Strategic Comparison: Is it a "Snapchat Clone"?
| Feature | Instagram Instants | Snapchat | BeReal |
| Primary Goal | Casual, unedited moments | Creative messaging | "Authentic" daily check-in |
| Editing | None (Text only) | Extensive (Lenses/Filters) | None |
| Viewing Limit | 1 View / 24-Hour Expiry | Replays allowed / No 24h cap | Unlimited for 24h |
| Source | In-app Camera Only | Camera + Uploads | In-app Camera Only |
The Verdict: Why Now?
The launch of Instants comes at a time when "feed fatigue" is at an all-time high. With Instagram's main feed dominated by Reels and sponsored content, users have shifted their "real" socializing to DMs. By splitting the camera into its own app, Meta is betting that people will share more if the pressure to be "perfect" is removed.
Will you download a separate app just for disappearing photos, or is your main Instagram app already "busy" enough?
